Bruce’s Summary: How does an HR professional keep an office romance under control as to not affect the company’s success? In relation to consensual affairs (neither party being in management), I’ve found that things go well for about 3 to 4 months and then someone realizes this is not what they want and the other suddenly has never been in love like this and is willing to leave everything. A Manager and subordinate romance is a throw of the dice and remember the house always wins. For allegations of sexual harassment or potential claims of a hostile work environment, the sooner an investigation is started the better. No debates.

At the end of the day, a clear and concise sexual harassment policy, with a signature page, is the best defense as a first step and the second is meeting required harassment training and documenting it. Remember that the person who just couldn’t make any of the four training sessions is special, because if you don’t follow up and train, there is no record. Your best defense is documentation. “None of the information contained herein should be construed as legal advice, nor are Calvin Associates consultants engaged to offer legal advice.
